Creating Captions

When creating a caption, ask yourself: what does the image show and to whom does the work belong?

Each time that you include an image, you will need to create a caption to appear below the image. Every figure in your document should be labeled Figure 1, Figure 2, and so on. The numbering should be sequential and based on the order in which the figures appear in the document.

The usual kind of information you need for the image caption includes:

  • who created the image (surname only); and/ or who it belongs to
  • the year it was created
  • a descriptive caption written by you and/ or the given title of the work (use italics for a given title)
  • relevant information around the format or medium of the image [within square brackets]

Top Tip:

Depending on your Word processor, you can right-click the image and select 'insert caption' from the dropdown menu to automate the numbering, i.e. figure 1, figure 2, etc. You can then add details of the image to the caption. Using the 'insert caption' function means you can automate creating a List of Figures rather than manually adding page numbers, etc.
