Creating a List of Figures with full image references

Your List of Figures should include all the figures (images, diagrams, charts, etc.) you have used in your written assignment (or presentation), along with their captions, references and page (or slide) numbers. This helps your reader easily locate visual content and their original sources.

  • When creating the List of Figures page, title the page 'List of Figures'.
  • List all figures numerically in the order they appear in your document with their full captions and their corresponding page numbers within the document.
  • Format the list similar to a Table of Contents, using leader dots (i.e. ...) to align page numbers neatly.
  • Each figure must then be fully referenced using Falmouth Harvard style (just like any other source) to show where you got it from.

Where you place the List of Figures depends on the type of assignment you are working on, so always check for any guidance in your assignment brief for specific instructions.

In a dissertation or research report, for example, the List of Figures appears after a Table of Contents and before the Introduction (some courses also ask for thumbnail images alongside the list – always check your brief or handbook.).

In a short essay or case study, meanwhile, it might be placed at the end of your written work, before the List of References.
