Teams and groupwork

Collaborating Online

A lot of teamwork is mediated through tech these days - especially in hybrid and virtual contexts - and teams today have a lot of options in terms of digital collaboration tools, including Discord, Miro, Microsoft Teams and Trello, for example. This means students can work together both synchronously and asynchronously.

If you are studying fully online,  you might find that your teammates are in other time zones, or have pressing external commitments. If this is you, be aware of:

  • Time zones - important when scheduling synchronous meetings and touch points.
  • External commitments - important to check for convenient times to meet or get work done by - this may need to be done asynchronously
  • Cultural expectations - be open to different ways of working within a diverse team - be actively inclusive
  • Language - understanding some students might not be studying in their first language - not letting this be a barrier
  • Communication - agreeing on a mode of communication (WhatsApp, Discord, Teams, Trello, etc); keeping communication channels open and touching base regularly
